  29. THOMAS W. T. WITHERSPOON-  Enlisted 19 Oct 1861 at Carrollton as 2nd Cpl. Reduced to ranks 28 Jun 1862. Captured at Port Hudson. Killed "by bushwhackers," on 17 Sep 1863. Buried at Old Jim Morris Farm, Carroll Co., Arkansas.

  30. NATHAN A. HODGE- Enlisted 19 Oct 1861 at Carrollton. Absent sick Jun 1862--Granted disability discharge 8 Jul 1862. Age at time of discharge: 47. Previously served in Company K, 4th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, State Troops. Murdered by Bushwhackers in Feb 1865.

  31. WILLIAM D. BERRY "BILLY"- Enlisted October 19, 1861, in Carrollton, Arkansas. Paroled July 12, 1863, at Port Hudson, Louisiana. Killed in a Shoot out with Union troops in 1864. 

27th Arkansas Infantry

  1. CAREY, WILLIAM Pvt- Enlisted at Carrollton, Arkansas, February 15, 1862; age 34; deserted, July 22, 1862; transferred to Co. E, August 1, 1862, but failed to report; died at Yellville, Arkansas, October 29, 1862.

  2. CARR, COLUMBUS Pvt- Enlisted at Scott’s Prairie, Arkansas, February 15, 1862; age 18; deserted, May 5, 1862; transferred to Co. E, August 1, 1862, but failed to report; died of disease in hospital at Little Rock, Arkansas, January 17, 1863 (record erroneously states January 17, 1862).

  3. COX, W F Pvt- Enlisted at Scott’s Prairie, Arkansas, February 15, 1862; age 25; transferred to Co. E, August 1, 1862; captured at Little Rock, Arkansas, September 10, 1863; sent to military prison at St. Louis, Missouri, October 14, 1863; died in prison, October 19, 1863.

  4.  HAMPTON, H L Pvt- Enlisted at Carrollton, Arkansas, February 15, 1862; age 18; transferred to (new) Co. C, August 1, 1862; died of disease in hospital at Little Rock, Arkansas, January 25, 1863.

  5.  KILLIAN, James Knox Polk Pvt- Enlisted at Carrollton, Arkansas, February 15, 1862; age 17; died, April 17, 1862.

  6.  JACKSON, OLIVER Pvt- Enlisted at Bellefonte, Arkansas, February 15, 1862; age 21, born in Tennessee; transferred to Co. D, August 1, 1862; died of disease in hospital at Fort Smith, Arkansas, December 5, 1862.

C, Adams’ Arkansas Regiment, in Carroll County, Arkansas, June 29, 1862; age 33, born in South Carolina; attached to this company at Camp Mazzard, Arkansas, December 17, 1862; detailed in quartermaster department, February 28, 1863; died at Camp Taylor, Girard Station, Louisiana, July 31, 1863.

E, Adams’ Arkansas Regiment, at Carrollton, Arkansas, August 9, 1862; age 25, born in Arkansas; attached to this company at Camp Mazzard, Arkansas, December 17, 1862; died of disease in hospital at Little Rock, Arkansas, January 20, 1863.

  14.  TRANTHAM, GREEN Private- Enlisted in Co. E, Adams’ Arkansas Regiment, at Carrollton, Arkansas, August 9, 1862; age 16, born in Tennessee; attached to this company at Camp Mazzard, Arkansas, December 17, 1862; died in hospital at Monroe, Louisiana, August 20, 1863.

  15. MEEK, ELI WESLEY Private- Enlisted with Captain Evan's Company, 1 Regiment, McBride's Brigade, Arkansas Infantry on Feb 15, 1862

    Transferred to Company B, Shaler's Regiment, 27th Ark Infantry August 1, 1862, and died 8 Nov 1862.

  16. JOHN R. WILSON Pvt.- Enlisted Jan 16, 1863. Killed Feb 22, 1864, By Union Bushwhackers.

  17. BENJAMIN F. TAYLOR- Transferred from 3rd Arkansas Infantry to 27th Arkansas Infantry in 1863. Died abt 1864.

  18. THOMAS M. PARRISH SR- Enlisted February 15, 1862, at Bellefonte, AR. Died in 1863 around Vicksburg, MS.

  19. OBADIAH B MCMAHAN- Pvt Enlisted Jefferson Township, Carroll Co June 20, 1862. Shot at Monroe, Ark and became sick he died Aug 29, 1863, in Monroe, AR.

  1. Jesse E Patty 2nd Lt. - Jesse was killed in action on April 1864 in Race Track Hollow, Arkansas. 

8th Missouri Infantry

  1. MARION SOOTER Pvt- Enlisted September 1, 1862, in Barry Co, Missouri. Killed one mile from Berryville, AR, and burned by the 1st Arkansas US Cav in February of 1865.

COCKE’S REGIMENT OF ARKANSAS INFANTRY

  1. KERBY, H.L. Pvt Enlisted 27 Aug 1862 in Carroll Co, AR. Died 2 Apr 1863 at a camp near Little Rock, AR.

  2. GREEN, W.S. Pvt Enlisted 29 Aug 1862 in Carroll Co, AR. Died 15 Jan 1863 at hospital at Ft Smith, AR.

  3. HAYTOR, H.B. Pvt Enlisted 29 Aug 1862 in Carroll Co, AR. Killed 7 Dec 1862 at Prairie Grove, AR.

  4. FREDRICK AARON BAKER Corp. In February of 1863 Frederick enlisted as a private in Company C, HILL’s Regiment, also known as 7th Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry. Prior to that time, he served in the war effort but the exact details are not clear. War records show that on June 13, 1862 Frederick enlisted as a Private in COCKES Reg., Company H, HAWTHORN’s Regiment Arkansas Infantry. He was reported absent without leave at 9/27/1862. However, Frederick reported in his statement given while imprisoned in Gratiot Street Prison that he was member of the Arkansas State Guard and was discharged 8/28/1862. He and his brother, Benjamin, were captured by the North on August 13th of 1863. According to his prisoner statement he was captured at his home in Carroll County while he was on a sick furlough from his regiment, which was camped in Indian Territory approximately 15 to 30 miles from Fort Smith. His brother was also in the Arkansas 7th Cavalry, Company C, and was on furlough with him. Frederick and Benjamin were both sent to Springfield, Missouri for a few weeks and then sent to Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis, Missouri, and then to Camp Morton, Indiana arriving there in November of 1863. Frederick requested to be exchanged back to the Confederacy. Although it appears that his brother was exchanged, Frederick was sent to Fort Delaware prison camp on 3/19/1864, arriving there five days later. He died of Typho-Mal Fever on July 31, 1864. He was buried at Finns Point National Cemetery which is just across the Delaware River from Fort Delaware on the Jersey shore.

  5. HENDERSON WHITELEY Pvt - Enlisted 13 June 1862 in Marion County, AR. Died in Alton, Illinois 3 Feb 1864.

  6. THOMAS C. WHITELEY Pvt- Enlisted 25 Oct 1862 in Marion County, AR. Wounded at Prarie Grove, AR and Died 30 Dec 1862.

  7. NINEVAH “Bud” CHANEY Pvt- Enlisted September 3, 1862, in Madison County. He was seriously wounded at Prairie Grove, Arkansas, in December 1862 resulting in the amputation of a leg. While at home Bushwhackers came. Bud hid in a cave but was found and shot down in 1863.

​3rd Arkansas Adams Infantry

  1. JOHN SNOW JR Pvt- Died NOV 10, 1862 in Huntsville, Madison Co., AR
    Note: He died of a fever, contracted while serving in Company B, 3rd Arkansas Infantry under Capt. W. S.Peel. during the Civil War. He died in a military hospital.

  2. THOMAS B. BELL Pvt- was captured in Carroll County and sent to Gariot Street prison in May 1863 and he would escape in June of 1863. Before being captured again in January of 1864 with Harrells Cav. He was shot with a pistol while in prison on April 19, 1864, and died April 26, 1864.

  3. FRANKLIN SISCO Died February 18, 1863.

  4. WILLIAM JONES ESTES Enlisted in 3rd Arkansas paroled June 13, 1863. Re-enlisted March 17, 1865. Died 1865. 

  5. MATHEWS, ALCANY B Enlisted in 3rd Arkansas paroled June 13, 1863. Re-enlisted in Arkansas Cav Co. A and was wounded in the arm and died in 1865.

Died 6 Jun 1862 at Okolona, Chickasaw, Mississippi. James Walden Diary, 6 Jun 1862 "This morn I have to record Jim's death. He expired about 3 o'clock this morning, after the most intense suffering day and night for the last ten days and nights."

  2. RICHARD M. PEEL- Pvt Enlisted June 9, 1861, at Fort Smith. Killed at the Battle of Oak Hills, August 10, 1861.

  1. JAMES M. BUNDY Pvt- Wounded at the Battle of Lone Jack Aug 16, 1862 died in 1864.
